INSITU 2018 THEME

Artists voices are important in shaping society, and public spaces are places for creative and free expression. - Creative Time

In the United States and around the world, we are experiencing a difficult sociopolitical climate and rapidly changing natural climate that puts many populations at risk. As we grapple with the realities of making work in such tumultuous and uncertain times, how can artists act as a catalysts of change? How can artists participate in civic discourse and promote awareness and social justice?

For INSITU 2018, we invite artists to use these questions as a point of departure:

  • How can artists become Artists-Citizens?

  • As Artists-Citizens what is the role of art? How is it relevant? What is its potential? How can it intervene?

  • When the language of current political leaders seeks to divide us, how can the work of Artists-Citizens create a space for creative dialogue and connection?

  • How can Artists-Citizens activate public spaces and consciously engage with the public to raise awareness and create bridges between communities and cultures?

  • How can dance and movement in public space be used as a tool for deeper community engagement and inspire people to move together and be agents of change?
  • If joy is form of resistance, what does it mean to be joyful in a time of social turmoil?  What does it mean to participate in, to move in, to dance in joy and active optimism while remaining conscious of a difficult reality and still work despite it?

OUR MISSION

INSITU’s mission is to activate public spaces through dance and create community through the arts. INSITU aspires to make dance accessible, connect with new audiences, and raise awareness of the power of movement to shape society and to transform ourselves and our communities. There are five core themes that INSITU embodies: PLAY, ENGAGE, CREATE, EMPOWER and CONNECT.

INSITU launched in July 2017 in four urban parks along the western Queens waterfront. 7,500 attendees enjoyed cutting-edge site-specific works created by 24 NYC-based contemporary choreographers. Read more about us HERE
